A message from an Egyptian you are representing - My email to Dr. Amr Hamzawy

Dear Dr. Hamzawy

I have watched your interview on Al-Nas TV channel (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AfBDnAVKkng) and I would like to give you my humble feedback.

1. I do understand and appreciate your attempts in changing the public mindset that was directed against liberals and liberalism in general by appearing on that specific channel to show your moderate ideology and beliefs.

2. I, personally, am having problems with your statement that pornography sites should be banned. Generally, I have a problem with banning. Throughout history, it is obvious that banning something only results in the growing of underground movements to fulfill the public desire.

3. The same goes for banning alcohol, taking the American experiment from 1920 to 1933 as an example to my previous statement.

4. Banning is always the "easy" solution, but sadly a short-termed one. Officials, and people generally, rarely choose the better long term solution which is education and awareness.

5. The country's role is not a guardianship role. One can argue that a father is his children's guardians, a husband is his wife/wives guardian, but everyone else is responsible for their own actions.

6. An intermediate solution that can be implemented while the long term solution is taking effect, would be giving households the choice of installing a minor-friendly internet service. That means having an ISP (or more) providing this service, and it is the choice of the household (arguable) guardian to subscribe to such service.

7. However, banning pornography will not assure nation-wide virtue. Parents and teachers still have to do their duties to spread awareness and to educate the children.

8. I also have a problem with your statement regarding Switzerland, where the Swiss never prevented Muslims (or any other religious affiliation) to preform their rituals. What they did was that they are trying to preserve their cities' architectural identity. Muslims can still build mosques, but they cannot build minarets.

Again, I do appreciate your appearance on that TV channel, but should have been more politically correct rather than trying to please the channel's audience.

I hope you take my remarks into consideration, if there was any thought of passing such legislations in the parliament.

Sincerely

Ramy Mamlouk

The flea that bit the King's butt

Although I am totally against expelling the Israeli Ambassador and cutting diplomatic ties with Israel (thinking it's both foolish and childish), but seeing the Flagman and the hacked Israeli Radio website gave me this little smirk in the corner of my mouth.

The point is, most of us have grown quite old. We still look at things from our 30+ year-old perspective. We believed that we can 'fix' the NDP from inside. We believed that Egypt was on a way for reform. We believed that the only way for Palestine is through diplomacy.

Ahmed Shahat, aka #Flagman, is the flea that bit the King's butt. He did not sabotage anything nor burn anything, just turned a few heads towards him. That's all.

Tolerating Diversity

When I thought I had the answer to tolerating diversity, something went wrong.

For the past year, I had this understanding, that in order to tolerate diversity, people just have to live together. Not live together as in the sense of live under one roof, but live together as in communicate, socialize, and just treat each other on the humanitarian level.

To illustrate my point, I'm going to bring out two young boys; Ahmed and Aaron. Aaron's family adopted Ahmed when he was 2. The two boys grew up together, playing innocently, until they reached a maturity level where they learned the complexity of their relationship. I would place my bets that the two boys would stay brothers, even if this was against everything both their cultures dictate.

I thought the answer to the Middle East conflict was to open communication channels between both sides. I thought that communicating long enough on the humanitarian level would drop all diversity conflicts so that two people could look at each other as human beings, and not on the skin they both wear. I thought that conflicting natures would fade after seeing the common ground long enough. I thought that no matter what I do in my free time, and no matter what you wear or believe is important now that we have found a comfort zone we both can co-exist in, while looking past our material differences.

What happened to tolerating diversity?

The Answer

Biomimicry. It is a very old school of thought, but focused on recently. They even gave it a name, which is still not recognized by dictionaries (Thesaurus).

Simply, it is looking at nature's solutions to solve our current scientific problems. The biggest and clearest example around us is the aeroplane. For man to be able to build a flying machine, he had to observe and understand how birds fly. Fabric industry began eons ago, but developed recently by observing spiders. Solar cells, the answer to all energy problems, was inspired by leaves. Cameras work using the same concept eyes use for seeing. The list of examples goes on and on, only to applaud the greatest designer of all times; The Creator.

The way I look at it, is that The Creator has placed the best designs for everything around us, and however hard we try to perfect our designs, we are only getting closer to His designs.

Let me illustrate this. Data storage. Technologists have pushed storage technologies, that it is growing exponentially in the last few years. Terrabyte hard drives, solid-state drives, DDRX RAMs, it is always the pursuit of cramming more data into the smallest devices. But, looking at the human brain as the perfect data storage device, maybe the ability to forget is the answer to it all. The human brain works with the same concept as most data storage devices seen nowadays, but it has the ability to forget, in order to make room for more in the future. Our imperfection might be the perfect design.

This might sound controversial, but inventing the wheel is one of the cornerstones of civilization (along with the ability to make fire), and it is not the ultimate method of transport. Recently, you can find a hoard of scientists trying to make robots walk. Their greatest challenge is going up and down stairs. The answer is not in multi-axis wheels, but it is in the way The Creator designed legs. The ultimate all-trail vehicle is the insect.

We are reaching a dead end in energy storage, where we are running out of elements and alloys from the periodic table to be used in batteries. The ultimate energy storage method is designed around the intake of biological materials, storing that in the form of fat, and using it when needed. Food!

The most efficient way to convert stored energy into kinetic energy is not the multi-stroke combustion engine. It is not alternating current motors. It is... muscles.

Doing some foretelling on my side, I see that:
  • Thumb drives and hard drives will tend to forget less important data, as a way to make more storage space available

  • Cars and moving machinery will use bio fuel as it is found to be the most efficient type of fuel

  • Cars will lose their wheels and have a pair of 15-20 insect-like pairs of legs, which will be found to be the most effective method of transport

  • Robots will require a closed cycle circulatory system to stabilize temperature and transport stored energy in the form of bio fuel

  • Flying machine makers will declare “flapping” and “gliding” as the most effective way for aerial transport

  • Time-travel will be declared as “impossible”, since no living creature designed by The Creator is able to do that (plus we haven't seen anyone from the future yet, have we?)

  • Cameras will develop a blinking mechanism to order to humidify and clean the bio-elastic lenses

  • Machines will be able to bleed, and reconstruct damaged parts

  • Information of the whole will be redundantly stored in a DNA-like structure in each building block

The Creator created the laws of physics, and created everything around us following these laws in the perfect designs. I don't think we will be able to supersede that.

The LOL Democracy

The Obama administration created an electronic discussion board in Jan 2009 as an electronic suggestion box. Phase 3 created 3,900 new ideas, out of which, 3 of the top 10 voted for ideas were:
Legalizing marijuana, and two featured conspiracy theories about Mr. Obama's true place of birth.
Article from Slashdot.

The following are excerpts from users comments.
  • "The United States is NOT a Democracy. We are a Republic. Under a Democracy, the majority forces their opinions on the minority and it eventually turns into an Oligarchy." - nschubach

  • "Let me spell it out for you: The United States is a 'Goldman Sachsocracy'" - Phillip K Dickhead

  • "I wish Americans had half the guts of 15-year-old Iranian girls! There'd have been 5 American Revolutions since 1870. Your textbook lies about the accountability of US government to the people have kept you complacent, and made you both arrogant yet ignorant and oppressed." - Philip K Dickhead

I think true democracy is a dream that all nations are striving for however psychedelic it may seem.

The Tortoise vs. The Hare

The Economy Crisis. The Second Greatest Depression. Whatever it is called, it is still a fact that we have to live with in this day and time.

One of the main reasons for this crisis, is the collapse of the credit system. In a nutshell, individuals and corporations wanted money that they did not have, turned to entities who had. With the success of that system, and the gains that were apparent on the economy, the credit system matured, and those money-having entities (banks) started giving out money that they did not have. Back then they were using a system of precedence to predict the return, and hence the limit on to which they can give out money. Further maturity of the system made insurance companies take a percentage of the risks off the banks, giving them the ability to give out more.

That collapsed (for whatever reason). Today, examples of the layoff figures are something like:
www.nowpublic.com
  • Citigroup - 59,000 layoffs

  • General Motors - 19,000 layoffs

  • Starbucks - 12,000 layoffs

On the other hand, less developed countries (or corporations based in less developed countries) are not directly affected by the worldwide crisis, except due to the interconnecting nature of the global economy. Like Sudan for instance, where there has been close-to-zero layoffs in 2008/2009, are only concerned that the international investors' cash flow will not be the same in 2009, and therefore, the gross annual loan figure will be lowered in 2009. However, Sudan's internal economy is still intact.

From my understanding stated above, it is clear that in order for any system to evolve, it has to reach a certain level of maturity before hoping on to the next step. Countries like Egypt, who have not jumped head-first into the game of capitalism, seem to be surviving (for the time being), because their banking system was not mature enough to get onto the next level of the extreme credit system.

This makes me think of a number of questions:

  1. Is the Middle-East ready for democracy? (Although it has not been exercised in the most democratic countries - Can you say War protests?)

  2. Is the Middle-East ready for freedom of speech? (Again, not exercised. Muslims are terror suspects if they talk about Islam anywhere in the world)

  3. Is the Middle-East ready for secularism?

  4. Is the Middle-East ready for equal rights for women?

  5. Is the Middle-East ready for human rights?

  6. Is the Middle-East ready for Capitalism?

  7. Is the Middle-East ready for GPS-based social networking?

Maybe we are ready, or partially ready, for a number of the items mentioned above. But in my opinion, we should evolve in our own time. We should evolve when we are ready. Evolution cannot be introduced or forced. Let us learn from others' mistakes.

You know, in the IT world (Windows), some large corporations adopt a do-not-install-a-service-pack-until-the-first-patch-is-released policy. The same can be seen in the Linux world, where enterprise distributions like CentOS are still running kernel 2.6.27, while desktop distributions like Ubuntu are running kernel 2.6.28.

As the saying goes, or in my case, I have slightly changed it:
"If I wasn't a Middle-Eastern, I would have wanted to be a Middle-Eastern"

Just a thought

I was having lunch with my family today when my mum narrated a story that was forwarded to her email. The story was about an old lady who used to feed a poor street cat. One day, the lady found out that the cat steels food from the kitchen although she feeds it regularly. The lady was astonished and upset at the same time. She decided to watch the cat to figure out why was it steeling. She found out that the cat took the food to give it to another blind cat down the street…

I was touched by the story. Of course I was very much touched with the street cat that cared for another helpless blind cat and brought it food. But to be honest, I was much more touched with “tolerating diversity” concept behind the story –which is the main theme of this blog-

The lady was patient and got out of her way to observe and try to understand why the cat that she used to feed and care for is steeling her. If the cat was able to talk, it would have simply told her about its blind fellow. But this was not the case…

If we can be patient and tolerant with animals, why aren’t we that patient with our loved ones, or with other humans in general and try to understand, respect and tolerate our diversities?
